The operation of the air conditioner is based on the joint operation of the condenser and evaporator (heat exchangers), compressor, expansion valve and fan forcing the air flow around the exchangers.
The working medium, also known as the cooling medium, is responsible for the collection of heat in the evaporator and its transfer in the condenser. The room air conditioner therefore operates as a closed system in which the refrigerant is constantly circulating. This mechanism is used by all air conditioners, both one-piece and two-piece.
The room air conditioner works within a simple scheme. In the evaporator , the refrigerant evaporates, thereby removing heat from the surroundings. The gaseous medium is sucked in by a compressor which increases its temperature and pressure.
The portable air conditioner must give up the collected heat, which is the responsibility of the condenser and the discharge pipe. When the refrigerant gave up heat in the condenser, it changed its state to a liquid and in this form later meets an expansion valve , the action of which causes a sharp drop in pressure and temperature. The refrigerant is transported through the piping system to the evaporator and the room air conditioner can restart the refrigeration cycle.

A portable air conditioner is a mobile device that can be moved to another room if necessary. However, this does not mean that it can be placed anywhere, because the construction of such equipment poses some limitations.
The information presented above shows that when choosing a portable air conditioner for your home, you should always take into account the need to lead a pipe outside (an air conditioner without a pipe is not actually an air conditioner, but an air conditioner) and consider where it will be possible to place the equipment, taking into account the technical conditions and costs of available solutions.

The parameters of individual air conditioners affect their efficiency, as well as the comfort of use and operating costs. It is worth reading them carefully to know which portable air conditioner will best suit the needs of the household.
Cooling and heating capacity
One of the most important technical parameters of a portable air conditioner is its cooling capacity, which determines how much surface a device will be able to cool. A portable air conditioner with a heating function usually has a slightly lower heating power than the cooling one.
The cooling capacity of most of the models on offer is between 2-4 kW, but there are also air conditioners with a capacity of more than 5 kW. It is assumed that a device with a power of at least 0.03 kW, ie 30 W, is needed to cool 1 m³ of air .
It can therefore be calculated that for a room with a size of 30 m² and a height of 2.7 m, you should choose an air conditioner with a minimum capacity of 2.43 kW (30 x 2.7 x 0.03 = 2.43). This applies to rooms that are provided with good thermal insulation and are not exposed to high heat gains. Otherwise, the cooling power demand is higher ( 0.045 kW per m³ and sometimes even more).
Devices intended for both lowering and raising the temperature usually also have a specific heating capacity, which may be the same or different than the cooling capacity, so it is worth considering if the portable air conditioner is to have additional functions in the house or apartment.
Sometimes the cooling capacity is expressed in BTU or BTU / h. To convert this to kW, simply multiply the BTU power by 0.000293. For example, a device with a capacity of 8000 BTU / h has a cooling capacity of 2.34 kW.
TIP : To cool a very sunny apartment, with large windows, in which many electronic devices work or intended for many people (e.g. office), choose a portable air conditioner designed for at least 20% larger area than the maximum size.

Portable air conditioners also differ in terms of airflow. This indicator shows the cooling rate, so the higher it is, the faster the device will be able to lower the temperature in the room. The best air conditioners in this respect provide an air flow of 400 m³ / h or even more.

Years ago, R22 was a popular refrigerant , but its negative impact on the environment (ozone depletion) meant that its use was banned in the EU.
R22 has been replaced mainly with R410, which consists of R32 and R125 gases and is considered to be much safer than its predecessor. It is this factor that uses the most air conditioners manufactured now.
Devices using the R407C refrigerant , which, in addition to R32 and R125 gases, contain R143A gas, can be found somewhat less frequently. Its safety is rated at the same level as that of the R410A refrigerant.
The constant search for the most environmentally friendly solutions resulted in the introduction of portable air conditioners using pure propane as a refrigerant, marked with the symbol R290 . It is the safest for the environment, so - if possible - it is worth choosing air conditioners with this compound.

Temperature range in air conditioners
In most room air conditioners, the difference between the lowest and the highest possible temperature is from 13 to 17 degrees C. Most often, the lowest limit is not less than 17 degrees C. A wide range of temperatures makes it easier to obtain a level of heat fully adapted to your needs.
It is worth remembering that the temperature in an air-conditioned room should not be lower than that outside by more than 7 degrees C. Otherwise, cooling may have a negative impact on our health.
Functions of portable air conditioners
Portable air conditioners also differ in the number of useful functions. Increasingly, users are looking for a device that, as a portable air conditioner, will simultaneously play the role of:

The operation of any air conditioner is accompanied by some noise. Basically all devices emit sounds louder than 50 dB. The upper operating range of a standard portable air conditioner fluctuates at the level of 65 dB. Manufacturers often give lower values, but they are usually not related to the main function of the air conditioner - cooling, but e.g. circulation (fan mode).
It is worth noting that the exact volume of the equipment usually depends on the speed of the fan. Some models are equipped with a night mode (sleep mode), in which they work more quietly, but the differences are not visible or the power of the device drops drastically.
TIP : Portable air conditioners are not quiet, so choosing a model with a higher power will allow the room to cool down faster and turn off the device.
